These creatures from various blocks all served the same purpose as the Study/Gift, but at the cost of one card and three mana (or four mana in the case of Stinging Barrier)
Why is this so hard
(Look at the top X cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.) At the beginning of your end step, surveil X, where X is the number of tapped Assassins you control
If you don't control five or more Towns at that time, the ability won't resolve and none of its effects will happen
