The companion mechanic allows you to add a companion to your sideboard and reveal it if your starting deck meets the conditions printed on the card
It wasn't exactly cheap at any point, coming in at around $70 pre-unban, a price in-line with most old-border foils (as in true old-border, not retro bordered cards printed more recently)
